The New England Patriots have been one of the most active teams this offseason — but could there still be one more veteran move left to make? Free agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney remains unsigned, and with money STILL left to spend after rookie contracts and expected veteran contract adjustments, the Patriots are one of the few teams positioned to add a player of his caliber without hesitation.

Let’s break down why Clowney to Foxborough actually makes sense.

🔥 Clowney Is Still Producing — And Then Some

Despite entering his 30s, Clowney is coming off some strong seasons – last season with the Panthers putting up 5.5 sacks in 14 games. But even more impressive was his 2023 stint with the Ravens — logging 9.5 sacks, 15 QB hits, and 5 tackles for loss in a rotational role. His power, versatility, and motor STILL all stood out, especially in playoff situations where Baltimore leaned on his experience.

He’s no longer expected to be the face of a defense, but as a complementary piece? He’s still a nightmare for offensive tackles.

🧱 Patriots’ Current Pass Rush Could Use a Boost

New England’s pass rush depth is solid but not without question marks. Christian Barmore is returning from the blood-clot scare, thankfully. Keion White looks to excel with a change of coaching. Not to mention newly acquired free agent signing Milton Williams.

Adding Clowney would give the Patriots another chess piece — someone who can slide inside on third downs, rotate in and out, or even provide early-down edge stability when needed.

💸 The Money Makes Sense

Clowney played on a team-friendly deal in 2024. If the Patriots could land him for something in the $4–6 million range with incentives, this becomes a low-risk, high-upside move.

With roughly $40 million (ESTIMATE) in usable cap space available, New England could afford Clowney and still remain flexible for in-season acquisitions or key player extensions when the time comes.

🧠 A Veteran Voice for a Young Defense

The Patriots defense is full of young talent: Gonzalez, Keion White, Barmore, and more. Bringing in a vet like Clowney gives them a proven presence in the locker room — someone who’s seen playoff battles, handled expectations, and can help raise the level of those around him.

🏁 Final Thoughts

Signing Clowney wouldn’t be about flash — although his name alone would get fans excited. But it would be about smart team-building. He doesn’t need to be a 60-snap-a-game guy anymore. He just needs to bring energy, physicality, and experience to a front seven that could quietly become elite in 2025.

So should the Patriots sign Jadeveon Clowney?

If they’re serious about competing in 2025 — the answer should be yes.
