Patriots Training Camp Day 5 Recap: First Day in Pads
By Pats Planet (Scotty B) – July 28, 2025

The Patriots hit the practice fields in full pads for the first time this summer, and it didn’t take long for things to get physical. The energy was high, the tempo stayed sharp, and the focus shifted heavily toward the ground game early on. Rhamondre Stevenson got things rolling, with Antonio Gibson, TreVeyon Henderson, Lan Larison, Terrell Jennings, and Trayveon Williams all rotating in for carries throughout the day. The first-team offensive line held its own, but the second-string unit struggled to create running lanes — something that stood out during live reps.
Drake Maye continued to stack solid practices. He went 13-of-21 in 1-on-1s and 5-of-6 in 11-on-11 team periods. There were a lot of short-to-intermediate reads, but he played with confidence and kept the offense on schedule. Ja’Lynn Polk was back in action and caught a touchdown in red zone work — a nice bounce back for him after missing time last week.
But the story of the day at wide receiver was Kayshon Boutte. He had the best day of any WR on the field and made it clear he’s coming into Year 3 with something to prove. Before Christian Gonzalez left with what appeared to be a leg injury, Boutte beat him twice in 1-on-1 matchups. He played strong, attacked the ball, and showed flashes of the physical playstyle he’s trying to bring to this offense. With Stefon Diggs and Pop Douglas already locked in, this WR room is heating up fast.
The defense had some moments too. Rookie CB D.J. James had a nice pass breakup against Kyle Williams. After Gonzo went down, Alex Austin, Marcus Jones, and rookie Marcellas Dial saw increased reps at outside corner. That will be something to watch if Gonzalez misses extended time.
As for the kicking competition, John Parker Romo continues to be lights out. He went 6-for-6 today and hasn’t missed a kick yet through five days of camp. Andres Borregales didn’t attempt a kick today, but he’s missed 1 kick in every other practice since training camp started — including 1 extra point. The battle isn’t over though, I still have Borregales as our Kicker Week 1.
Full recap video is now live — breaking it all down, including my thoughts on Gonzo’s Injury, Boutte, Drake Maye’s command of the offense, and how this camp is starting to shape up. Go check it out.
