Patriots Scrimmage Camp Day 9 Recap

Patriots Under the Lights: Blue vs. White Scrimmage Recap

Gillette Stadium — Foxborough, MA

Written by: Scotty B (Pats Planet Media)

The Patriots hosted season-ticket members and local residents for an in-stadium scrimmage Friday night, as the Blue and White squads squared off in full pads under the lights. With a points-based scoring system in place, the White Team pulled out a 47–38 win — and while the score mattered, all eyes were on player performances and how the teams looked as a whole

It was up and down.

Coaching Staff Assignments

Mike Vrabel delegated head coaching duties – was also in charge of who received what reps.

  • Blue Team HC: Zak Kuhr (ILBs)
  • OC: Josh McDaniels
  • White Team HC: Thomas Brown (TEs)
  • DC: Terrell Williams

Roster was split via a coach-led draft.

Quarterback Headlines

Drake Maye (Blue Team) had an up-and-down night:

  • Threw his first two interceptions of camp
    • INT #1: Tipped off Stefon Diggs’ hands, picked by Robert Spillane
    • INT #2: Misread with rookie Kyle Williams, jumped by Alex Austin (nearly a pick-six)
  • Did find the end zone — 32-yard TD to Williams on a trick play
  • Red Zone woes: Overthrew Stevenson and Diggs, settled for field goals
  • Next drive struggles: 3 throwaways + rare Efton Chism drop
  • Offense dealt with: penalties and lack of separation

Joshua Dobbs (White Team) made the most of his reps:

  • Play of the night: Dropped a 35-yard TD dime to Kayshon Boutte vs. Cover 2
  • Also connected with Boutte on a deep dig in 2-minute drill → led to Parker Romo FG

Defense Dominates Turnovers

The defense’s summer-long focus on takeaways paid off in primetime:

  • 5 total offensive giveaways (4 INTs, 1 fumble)

Standouts:

  • Robert Spillane:
    • 1 INT off tipped ball
    • 1 fumble recovery (forced by Brandon Crossley on Rhamondre Stevenson)
  • Jaylinn Hawkins:
    • Scrimmage captain
    • 2 INTs: one off a Pop Douglas trick-play throw, another off a Lan Larison tip
  • Alex Austin:
    • Jumped Maye hitch in 2-minute drill, slid to burn clock
  • Christian Elliss:
    • Stoned TreVeyon Henderson for a run stop in the backfield

Offensive Concerns

  • Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled again, a growing issue (7 fumbles in 2024)
  • Ball security remains a focal point heading into preseason
  • Antonio Gibson sat out, giving reps to TreVeyon Henderson, Larison, Terrell Jennings
  • Kendrick Bourne exited early with what appeared to be a lower-leg issue

Playmakers on Offense

  • Kayshon Boutte:
    • TD grab of the night + chain-moving dig-route reception
    • Looked good with Dobbs
  • Kyle Williams:
    • Wide open on trick-play TD from Maye
    • Continues to flash as an ascending rookie WR
  • Lan Larison:
    • 5-yard TD run on a smooth jump cut
    • In the RB4 mix with Jennings
  • Gee Scott Jr.:
    • Hauled in Maye’s first pass on the night (hitch route)

🔧 Special Teams & Other Notes

  • Andres Borregales:
    • Perfect: 3 FGs (42, 42, 53 yards) + 1 XP
  • Parker Romo:
    • Knocked in FG to finish Dobbs’ 2-minute drill
  • Cole Strange:
    • High snap to Dobbs derailed a play
  • D.J. James:
    • Flagged for DPI (Ja’Lynn Polk target)
