When you have Tom Brady, you have a huge security blanket. You had him from 2000-2019. You also had key contributors who were a part of both dynasties eras. Sturdy offensive lines and vet presence.
But vet presence comes at a price if you are missing the mark in the draft.
From 2016 to Brady’s last year, the average age of the Patriots roster increased. Yes, having an ageless aging QB will spike that number, too.
2019 – oldest roster (27.6)
2018 – oldest roster (27.5)
2017 – 31st oldest (27.2)
2016 – 17th oldest (26.3)
Post Brady, you lacked stability at the most important position and leadership. You didn’t have a plan to lean back on. The Cam Newton experiment did not work. Mac Jones for a year looked positive, but the was ruined with coaching decisions.
You now lacked talent on the roster and knowledge in the coaching staff.
Fast-forward to 2025, the Patriots have the 5th youngest roster (26.3). Your coaching staff has been swept clean in many areas. A new identity is being searched for.
When you look at this roster, there are bright spots sprinkled around. You have leaders on both sides of the ball (Maye, Gonzalez) who are looking to step into those roles. You have youth being thrown into the fire day 1 (Campbell, Wilson). Running back TreVeyon Henderson is a talent that you will WANT to have with the ball in his hands. Safety Craig Woodson played every snap of week one and showed disciplined tackling.
Forged in Foxborough continues to be a true statement.
To forge iron takes patience. It’s a process that requires heat, holding it steady and then shaping it. This football team is no different. They will be stretched, they will be challenged. They will fail, they will grow. They will become stronger as a team and shape into a product that will produce.
It’ll just take time and patience.
